Open Instagram on either your mobile device or your desktop and navigate to your personal page by clicking on the profile icon (on mobile) or your profile picture and username (on desktop).
To change your avatar's look, head back to your profile and tap Edit Profile. Click on your avatar and select Edit Avatar.
