Mar 12, 2008 · In your example, "on the afternoon of that day" = "(on) that day's afternoon" = "(on) that day, in the afternoon" = "in the afternoon (on) that day". I don't know a rule for it. Sometimes only "on" fits the context, sometimes only "in", sometimes no preposition is allowed, and sometimes we have a choice: On a Wednesday afternoon.

Nov 18, 2011 · And, when someone says "It's a nice day, isn't it" if you reply yes it is, it would be a wrong interpretation of the sentence. We shouldn't say "yes"! Because it is just an informative sentence not a questioning one. The speaker just wants to share his/her feeling with you.

Jun 17, 2011 · Just leave out "Greetings of/for the day!" entirely -- and the rest is pretty much where it should be. If it were a standard inclusion, you would probably know the preposition. Since you're asking, I'm guessing that you think it's a nice addition. I wouldn't do it if it's not a standard opening for Indian business correspondence.

I found it in an older English grammar book from the 60s as well, but no explanation why it is spelled with a hyphen...
