When No. 31 pulled her first passenger train on September 1, 1960, she was the first steam locomotive returned to passenger service in the United States! Saving the locomotive from the scrap heap and putting it back into passenger service was a huge accomplishment for the little Strasburg Rail Road.

May 9, 2023 · Locomotive No. 31 is Strasburg Rail Road’s second-oldest locomotive in stock. Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1908, this steam engine spent her early years on the Grand Trunk Railway and later on the Canadian National Railway (CN) until she was retired in 1958 and worked as a switcher.

It's been 15 years since #31 was out of service in 2009 for a complete overhaul. The Strasburg Railroad cannot run passenger trains with only two operating steam locomotive available such as #89 and #475. #90 still in it's required 15 year boiler treatments.
