
EMD SD45 - Wikipedia
The SD45 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive class built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1965 and 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 twenty- cylinder engine generating 3,600 hp (2,680 kW) on the same frame as the SD38, SD39, SD40, and SDP40. As of 2023, most SD45s have been retired, scrapped or rebuilt to SD40-2 standards.

It was a passenger-hauling version of the SD45 on a stretched locomotive frame with an extended, squared-off long hood at the rear, aft of the radiators, giving space for a steam generator for passenger train heating. This steam generator placement followed the pattern set by the SDP35 and SDP40.

Feb 13, 2025 · UP 60 was an EMD SD45, UP Designation EMD/Morrison Knudsen SD45M. Reportedly, it was built in 1968 by EMD as UP 3634 an SD45, builders number 33443, from UP series 3600-3649. It was renumbered UP 34 in 1978. It was rebuilt in 1980, equipped with a Sulzer 16ASV25R-30 engine and 62:15 gear ratio. Union Pacific called these units SD45Ms.

It had been phased from mainline service on Class 1's to helper service, and now very few "true" SD45's remain active.

Just finished weathering this HO Scale SD45M (SDP45). SP SD45P 8695. Also called SD45M's. 8695 was built in August 1970 for the Eire Lakawana as 3662.
