May 26, 2008 · NOS long gray-plate GE 12AX7 has good clarity, but rolls off the top-end frequencies. That'd be my first choice. I'll also second the RFT ECC83 (though it doesn't do clean well) and the short gray-plate/square-getter Sylvania 12AX7 that Bob (and others, for the RFT) have mentioned.
