Dassault's proposal for what became the Mirage IV was chosen on the basis of lower cost and anticipated simpler development, being based upon a proposed early 1956 twin-engined night-fighter derived from the Dassault Mirage III fighter and the unbuilt Mirage II interceptor.

A total of 62 production Mirage IV nuclear bombers were built and when the aircraft remaining in service where first camouflaged, they did not carry unit markings, but the insignia of Mont-de-Marsan based EB 1/91 'Gascogne' was later added to this one.

The Snecma Atar 9 B jet engines – 13,200 lb of thrust with reheat – were identical to those of the Mirage III A which first flew in May of 1958, a full year before the Mirage IV. The Mirage IV was the first French aircraft to incorporate one-way electronic flight controls for pitch and roll.
