Pierwsza generacja Masaf-2 była dostosowana do naboju 5,56 x 45 mm. Ostatecznie zdecydowano się jednak na nabój NATO 7,62 x 51, jaki zasila karabin G3. W pierwszej kolejności, po 2021, karabiny Masaf-2 trafiały do irańskich jednostek specjalnych. Ich masowe dostawy do wojsk lądowych rozpoczęły się dopiero kilka miesięcy temu.
