Adolphe Adam (born July 24, 1803, Paris, France—died May 3, 1856, Paris) was a French composer whose music for the ballet Giselle (1841) is noted for its easy grace and cogency. It has retained its popularity with dancers and audiences to the present day.

Underpinning it all is the masterful score of Adam, featuring highlights such as the ‘Pas d’esclave’, the ‘Pas de trois des odalisques’ and ‘Le Corsaire pas de deux’ which was composed by Riccardo Drigo for Petipa’s St. Petersburg version.

Le Corsaire was one of the final creations by two of the 19th century ballet’s greatest figures – it was one of the last ballets created by Joseph Mazilier and the final ballet composed by Adolphe Adam before his death a few months after the première.
