The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit includes 8 handler and K-9 teams. There are no cross trained teams. In addition to performing drug searches, they also can provide backup to deputies, locate suspects and victims, and find evidence at or near crime scenes.

K-9 Unit - KCSO Traffic Squad
The K-9 Unit is comprised of deputies (handlers) partnered with highly-trained canines. These specially trained dogs are bred and chosen for their intelligence and strong sense of smell. These dogs can help when pursuing fugitives, searching for missing persons, narcotics, weapons, and explosives detection.

Every K9 team, in the unit, is skilled at tracking, whether it is for fleeing criminals, lost persons or missing children. Our most common service our K9 teams utilize is the detection of illegal and dangerous drugs. 14 of our teams are trained to seek out and locate illegal drugs.
