The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, commonly referred to as the Jefferson Bible, is one of two religious works constructed by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson compiled the manuscripts but never published them.

The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth was created in 1820 by Thomas Jefferson. He was seventy-seven years old when he constructed his book by cutting excerpts of the New Testament Gospels from six printed volumes published in English, French, Latin and Greek.

Jefferson Bible, abridgment of the New Testament compiled by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson rearranged the text of the Gospels into an account of the life and ministry of Jesus that eschews mention of any supernatural or miraculous elements and stresses his moral teachings.

When Thomas Jefferson was vice president, he promised Benjamin Rush a “letter on Christianity.” It was not until 1803, when Jefferson read a short treatise by Joseph Priestley, Socrates and Jesus Compared, that Jefferson was motivated to sketch out his syllabus, which he sent to Rush.

This is Thomas Jefferson's attempt at editing the Gospels into a single, coherent narrative. The text here focuses on the attributed words of Jesus: chiefly the Sermon on the Mount and the parables. Jefferson highlights the ideas of the Gospels, rather than miracles and wonder stories.
