The name Dublin comes from the Middle Irish word Du(i)blind (literally "Blackpool"), [19] from dubh "black, dark" and linn [l̠ʲin̠ʲ(dʲ)] "pool". This evolved into the Early Modern Irish form Du(i)bhlinn, [19] which was pronounced "Duílinn" [ˈd̪ˠiːlʲin̠ʲ] in the local dialect.
