A full-blooded Choctaw Indian, Carnes was arrested in 1943 at the age of 16 for murder and was sentenced to life in prison. In 1945, he escaped, stole a car and kidnapped its driver before crossing state lines. When he was re-captured, he was given another 99 years and sent to Leavenworth Prison.
