Modern designs of beam tetrode use an electrode geometry which enables the device to achieve its full potential, resulting in higher efficiency, much higher output for a given size and operation from audio to UHF all without the use of beam plates.

The beam tetrode eliminates the dynatron region or tetrode kink of the screen grid tube by utilizing partially collimated electron beams to develop a dense low potential space charge region between the screen grid and anode that returns anode secondary emission electrons to the anode. [34]

The descriptions of beam-tetrodes and pentodes within the museum make clear the legal and practical differences between them. However, in many lists valves from the different technologies are rated as interchangeable or 'sensibly equivalent'.

In the beam power tube, the basic four-element structure of the tetrode was maintained, but the grid and screen wires were carefully arranged along with a pair of auxiliary plates to create an interesting effect: focused beams or “sheets” of electrons traveling from cathode to plate.

Beam power tubes have the same grid arrangement as the power pentodes. In addition, they use a set of beam-forming plates to force the electron stream into concentrated beams. Figure 2-6 depicts the internal construction of a beam-forming tube and its schematic representation.
