Aluminium (or aluminum in North American English) is a chemical element; it has symbol Al and atomic number 13. It has a density lower than that of other common metals, about one-third that of steel. Aluminium has a great affinity towards oxygen, forming a protective layer of oxide on the surface when exposed to air.

The element was known in prehistoric times. In 1825, the Danish physicist, Hans Christian Oersted, isolated impure aluminium. The pure metal was first isolated by the German chemist Friedrich Wöhler in 1827.

Aluminum naturally produces a thin oxide covering that protects the metal from further interaction with the environment. Aluminum alloys are less corrosion resistant than pure Aluminium except for marine magnesium-aluminum alloys. Aluminum is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
