Development of the first Soviet post-war medium tank started in 1951. In 1961, the T-62 tank with a smoothbore gun was deployed. At the same time a variant, the T-62A, with a rifled gun was also deployed. In March 1962, mass production of the T-62A was discontinued.

The T-62A (Obyekt 165) was one of several competing medium tank designs originally intended to replace the older T-54 medium tank. It was designed in 1957 by the Uralvagonzavod design bureau at Nizhniy-Tagil led by Leonid Kartsev.

Although it’s hull is a bit larger/taller than the Obj. 140’s, it’s turret armor compensates with many many bounces. One of my favorite tanks. The T-62A is not a front-line fighter, and is more suited to skirmishing tactics due to its weaker hull armour. This tank may not be the fastest, best armed, or armored tier X medium tank, but it has the fastest rate of fire (1 round in less than every 6 seconds), great penetration, and can even outurn the fast T-50-2.
