A sparkling blue-green body of water at the foot of Vulcan Peak, this is a very pleasant picnic or camping spot within the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Easily accessible, this naturally barren lake and surrounding area offer unique geological and botanical sights.

The Vulcan lakes are cirque lakes or tarns, meaning they formed in a hollow carved by the movement of a val-ley glacier. A series of tarns can look like a giant’s footprints, each print filled with lakes and connected by streams. These are also known as “paternoster” lakes because they look like rosary beads. This trail provides access to the top of Vulcan Peak (4,655 Feet), an old fire lookout site on the southwest edge of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. A magnificent view rewards the traveler. To look down into Vulcan Lake, you must walk along the ridge off the trail, so be careful.

Use Vulcan Lake / Johnson Butte Trailhead. Take Vulcan Lake Trail #1110A or Johnson Butte Trail #1110 to Gardner Mine Trail #1122 to access the loop.

Lake environments are limited, primarily to Babyfoot Lake on the eastern boundary and Vulcan Lake on the west. Since these areas are readily accessible from nearby trailheads, they do receive a greater amount of day-use visitation.
