Dec 5, 2006 · The narrow meaning is words like "umm" "err" "ah" and "uh", that don't express meaning or change meaning. They only prevent someone else from speaking, allowing the speaker to "still have the floor" while finding new words. The term "filler" works for that, I think.

The other suggested translations uh huh and uh hum are both fine. Yeeess sounds like it's supposed to be a question, like "Yeeesss, and?!" I see would also work, but go on is slightly different in meaning - encouraging the person to continue, rather than just making a noise/comment to show that what they said has been heard by the other person.

Jul 29, 2016 · There's a similar interjection, but expressing agreement -- uh-huh. In my off-line M-W it's given with two ways of pronouncing it (the mouth open and closed). In the online version of the dictionary though, it only comes with the mouth open. So I think the spelling is the same for both ways of saying it in speech.
