The USS St. Louis (C-20/CA-18), was the lead ship of her class of protected cruisers in the United States Navy. St. Louis was launched on 6 May 1905 by the Neafie & Levy Company, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was sponsored by Miss Gladys Bryant Smith and commissioned on 18 August 1906 with Captain Nathaniel R. Usher in command. [4]

Jul 8, 2020 · Designated C20, 21 and 22, USS St. Louis, Milwaukee and Charleston were started in 192 (January and July), launched in 1904-05, and completed in May, August 1906 and October 1905 for USS Charleston, so the class should have been named Charleston, as she was the first laid down and completed.

Following the end of WWI and the signing of the Armistice, thousands of U.S. troops were brought home on the St. Louis. In her last mission under active duty, the USS St. Louis was sent to the Mediterranean carrying U.S. mediators during the Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922).
