Tweed Heads - History
The first European to explore the area was Captain Cook, who sailed past Tweed Heads in 1770. However, it wasn't until the mid-nineteenth century that the first European settlers arrived. The town was named after the Tweed River, which was named after the River Tweed in Scotland.

Tweed Heads had a long history as part of a river system used for commerce and pleasure. The Tweed Heads Pilot Station operated from 1870. These six plans from 1917 to 1927 show the size and range of buildings from the cottages for the boatmen to housing for the station’s rockets.
