Jan 29, 2025 · After Mongolia became a Soviet satellite state in the 1920s, Mongol Zurag, slowly but surely, became the voice of resistance of Mongolian artists looking to rediscover their cultural heritage.

Mongol zurag (Mongolian: Mонгол зураг, Mongol painting) is a style of painting in Mongolian art. Developed in the early 20th century, zurag is characterised by the depiction of secular, nationalist themes in a traditional mineral-paint–on–cotton medium similar to Tibetan thangka.

Mongolian traditional style of painting rooted in a Buddhist pictorial tradition is known as Mongol Zurag (literally: Mongolian picture). This tradition was instrumental in maintaining the cultural identity for Mongolian artists during the period of socialism in the twentieth-century.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of a professional organization of fine arts in Mongolia, and the 20th anniversary of the "Mongolian Painting" Association, the best works of Mongolian painting " BEST OF MONGOL ZURAG” the exhibition is presented.

Uuriintuya Dagvasambuu (b.1979) is a contemporary master of the Mongol Zurag painting, and is widely respected for her innovations in this style. She notably integrates traditional Mongolian and Buddhists motifs with contemporary themes, as she chronicles the lives of women and everyday, mundane life across the seasons in her post-nomadic homeland.
