Treetops – 70 years of ski, golf, and adventure. The history of Treetops starts with the granddaddy of Gaylord downhill skiing, Ouelette ”Lin” Meade. Lin opened the Sylvan Knob Ski Area in 1954, sporting two tow ropes and six slopes. From ski hills to golf courses.

Established in 1954 as Sylvan Knob Ski Area, Treetops Resort has since invested decades into expanding its ski hills and lodging options, and building a solid reputation as the premier golf destination in the Midwest.

If you have fond memories of flying down the slopes on your favorite hill, but the area has closed, let us know about it. Michigan has a long, rich history of skiing and sliding and it should not be forgotten.

Oct 20, 2001 · Located east of the quaint alpine-themed village of Gaylord, Treetops has developed into one of Michigan’s premier four-season resorts. Established in 1954, the ski area was known as Sylvan Knob until it was acquired by the Melling family in 1982.

Oct 10, 2021 · Treetops Resort is located in Gaylord, Michigan, about three and half hours from Detroit, and its history dates back to the 1950s. Before it was Treetops, the ski resort was called Sylvan Knob and opened in December of 1954.

Treetops Resort in Gaylord is proud to celebrate 65 years of ski and snow operations this winter. It all started on January 2, 1954 when Lin Meade developed and opened Sylvan Knob Ski Area with Michigan’s FIRST Poma Lift, two tow-ropes, six slopes, and one “School Slope” for Ski School participants.
