Switzerland is not a member of the European Union and joined the United Nations very late compared to its European neighbours. Switzerland maintains diplomatic relations with almost all countries and historically has served as a neutral intermediary and host to major international treaty conferences.

The Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York promotes Switzerland's interests at the UN Headquarters, in line with the country’s foreign policy goals.

On 9 June 2022, the UN General Assembly elected Switzerland as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Switzerland's non-permanent 2023–24 seat furthered the country's commitment to peace and security within the UN and globally.

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations office was established in 2002, after Switzerland joined the United Nations. It is located at 633 Third Avenue in New York .

Following a referendum in March 2002, Switzerland became on 10 September 2002 the 190th Member State of the United Nations. Before joining as a full member, the Host Country was a Permanent Observer to the Organization, as well as an active member of many of its specialized agencies, programmes, funds, and the Conference on Disarmament.
