In Purgatorio, Dante ascends Mount Purgatory, guided by Roman poet Virgil. The climb is meant to teach Dante important lessons about Christian virtue and God's love, cleansing him of his sins in preparation for his eventual journey toward God. First Stage (Stubbornness)

As Dante leaves Hell behind him, he and Virgil begin the next phase of their journey – towards, and eventually up, the mountain of Purgatory. Here there are terraces that spiral upwards, as the souls within each are purified from vice and prepare to enter heaven.

Purgatory proper consists of seven levels or terraces (Purgatorio X–XXVII) of suffering and spiritual growth, associated with the seven deadly sins. Finally, the Earthly Paradise is located at the top of the mountain (Purgatorio XXVIII–XXXIII).

There are seven levels of Purgatory, and they are equivalent to the deadly sins. They divide the mountain into terraces, and each terrace has its deadly sin. Starting from the top, the levels are Lust, Gluttony, Greed or Avarice, Sloth, Anger, Greed, and Pride.
