The Electro Motive Division SD40-2 is a six-axle, 3,000 hp diesel locomotive built from 1972 to 1986. It is an upgrade of the original EMD SD40; being part of EMD's "Dash 2" line.

Heading up the yard tracks to go pick up a sting of auto racks. An 8 unit consist is making its way to the Diesel Facility as it runs along the yard while some other power; mainly EMDs, wait their turn to go through the service area in Galesburg, Illinois.

This B-unit was only used by the BN (the prototype was built from a damaged A-unit). The model was imported in unpainted brass. Originally, these models had wheels gauged to the old NMRA standard for S-scale, so be sure to check them with a NASG wheel gauge.

My first engine was an O gauge F7, a far cry from the locomotive that I love, the Electro-Motive Division SD40-2. In fact, nine years later when I decided to switch from O gauge to HO scale, the first locomotive I bought was an Athearn “blue box” SD40-2 kit. What changed?

Number 7500 was built June 1980 in Canada as BN SD40-2 7221 ( c/n A3930 ), rebuilt in July 1981 to SD40-2B 900B, renumbered to 7500. One source indicates the unit was wrecked at Pasco, Washington in early 1981 and rebuilt at West Burlington.
