The Radio Access Network (RAN) is the part of a mobile network that connects end-user devices, like smartphones, to the core network. It uses radio frequencies to provide wireless connectivity to these devices.

Conceptually, it resides between a device such as a mobile phone, a computer, or any remotely controlled machine and provides connection with its core network (CN).

A RAN provides access to and coordinates the management of resources across the radio sites. A handset or other device is wirelessly connected to the backbone, or core network, and the RAN sends its signal to various wireless endpoints so it can travel with traffic from other networks.

The mobile, or cellular/wireless network comprises two domains: the Radio Access Network (RAN) and the Core Network (Core). The RAN is the final link between the network and the phone.
