The RPD (Russian: ручной пулемёт Дегтярёва, romanized: Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova, English: Degtyaryov hand-held machine gun) is a 7.62x39mm light machine gun developed in the Soviet Union by Vasily Degtyaryov for the 7.62×39mm M43 intermediate cartridge. It was created as a replacement for the DP machine gun chambered for the 7.62×54mmR round.

Jan 31, 2023 · The RPD was a belt-fed 7.62x39mm adaptation of the basic Degtyarev action that drove the WWII-vintage Soviet DP pan-fed machine gun. The RPD fed from a pair of non-disintegrating 50-round belts that linked together to provide 100 rounds of onboard firepower, all packed into a sheet steel drum.

Thanks to continuous 50-round ammunition belts, rounds could be linked together, making the RPD capable of firing 100 continuous rounds of ammunition. At just a little over 15 pounds, the RPD was significantly lighter than the M60’s 23-pound weight.

With a rate of fire of 650 RPM and a muzzle velocity of 735 m/s, firing was achieved through a simpler “ push through ” design that forced out the front of the belt, into the chamber.
