Raid-z3 worth it over Raid-z2 for 10-disk vdev? : r/truenas - Reddit
Apr 28, 2022 · Spare drives are not worth it in my opinion. If the system is at home, you can easily access it and do not need a spare drive. If the system is far away, instead of just sitting there burning up electricity and spinning hours waiting for the chance to jump in, you could use that drive by using RAID-Z3 instead of RAID-Z2.
RAID-Z3 vs 2x RAID-Z2? : r/DataHoarder - Reddit
RAID-Z3 of 11x 8TB drives or 2x RAID-Z2 of 6x 8TB drives. Both net the same usable pool of storage. This is mostly for single-user archival storage / backup / media files. Here's the pros/cons as I see them: Pros of RAID-Z3 config:
ZFS: RAID-Z3 (raidz3) Recommended Drive Configuration
May 22, 2006 · The lower F is, the GREATER the advantage of RAID-Z3 over RAID-10 for minimizing chance of data loss. If F=1%, then the probability of data loss with RAID-Z3 is only 0.011%. That is a factor of 87 times higher chance of data loss with RAID-10 …
When would I want to use raidz3 vs raidz2? : r/DataHoarder - Reddit
Mar 22, 2019 · Bad sectors are only a problem if you have already lost two drives and you will lose the stripe where the bad sectors actually are and hence you will then lose the file(s) that contain that stripe, if you run scrubs regularly then any detected bad sectors will have the stripe reconstructed using the parity data and a new stripe will be written ...

Performance of mirror vdevs V.S. raidZ2/raidZ3 vdevs : r/truenas
Feb 4, 2022 · 15 votes, 21 comments. true. Yes, the TrueNAS docs are talking about a single mirror vdev having slower sequential I/O than a RAID-Z vdev whereas those articles are comparing a pool with one RAID-Z vdev vs a pool made from multiple mirror vdevs which is ZFS's equivalent to RAID-10.

12 drive setup: 1 RAIDZ3 or 6x2 RAIDZ2 : r/DataHoarder - Reddit
Jan 12, 2018 · Mathematically speaking (in sense of data safety vs. disk failure) 12 disk RAID Z3 is safer than 2 x RAID Z2 6 disks. Why: Because on Z3 3 random disk can fail and you are still safe. If 3 disks at once on one RAID Z2 fail the one RAID Z2 is lost. Nevertheless because of performance (I ignored above) you should maybe use 2 x RAID Z2.
