Jun 12, 2013 · ‘Punga’ is a quintessential Kiwi word used to refer to tree ferns or sometimes, more specifically, the trunks of tree ferns. But in his book A Dictionary of Maori Plant Names, James Beever does not record any tree ferns as being called punga by Māori.

Tt is the most common of pungas and through out the forest. Cyathea medullaris is a tall tree fern characterised by black frond stalks (stipes) and fronds arching upwards from the crown. Shedding of old fronds occurs when stipes break at their point of attachment to the trunk leaving a surface with closely-spaced hexagonal leaf-base scars.

Jan 10, 2017 · Tree ferns are colloquially known in New Zealand as “Pungas”. This appears to be an English corruption of “Ponga”, a Maori name specific to Cyathea dealbata (silver fern). The unfolding fronds of the tree fern are represented in the Koru, now pretty much a symbol of our country & its Maori heritage.

The Koru suite is on the east side – first to see the morning sun. Through the French door you can see the new leaves of the punga (New Zealand tree fern) emulating the koru (beginning of life). Stunning views of beautiful native bush, the mountains, Coromandel town and Te Kouma harbor are viewed through the double bi-fold doors to the south.
