Kabji Hoka Tsho – This pristine lake is hidden away in the middle of dense jungle vegetation. There is a legend about a lake in Punakha that never overflows as it is continuously drained through an opening created by the deity residing in it, believed to have been created as a result of a demon threatening to flood the place.

4 days ago · Kabji-Hoka Tsho is a sacred and one of the largest lakes in Bhutan. It is located in Kabje Gewog under Punakha Dzongkhag at 2130 m eters above sea level. The lake never overflows, as it drains through an opening believed to have been created by the lake’s deity.

Only four lakes are below an altitude of 2,000 metres (6,600 ft): the temperate Kabji-Hoka Tsho in Punakha District at 1,829 metres (6,001 ft); Luchika in Wangdue Phodrang at 1,830 metres (6,000 ft); Buli Tsho in Zhemgang at 1,372 metres (4,501 ft); and the subtropical Gulandi in Samdrup Jongkhar at 366 metres (1,201 ft).

Blessed with temperate climate and owing to its natural drainage from Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, the Punakha valley produces abundant crops and fruits. There are splendid views of the distant Himalayas at Dochula pas (alt. 3,050m) on Thimphu – Punakha road.
