Old Plantation Flats Lighthouse, the last remaining manned lighthouse on the eastern side of Chesapeake Bay, was torn down in 1962 and replaced by an automatic pole light attached to the old lighthouse’s foundation.

In the 1890s the Pennsylvania Railroad established Cape Charles, Virginia as the southern terminus of its Eastern Shore rail system. The Corps of Engineers dredged out a lagoon and created a channel running across the flats, with the light serving to mark its entrance.

A replica of this lighthouse with a reproduction of a fourth order Fresnel lens was built in 2004 by the Bay Creek Resort & Club in Cape Charles; also has installed a 1942 bronze fog bell originally used on a bell buoy.
