PGY, short for postgraduate year, is a North American numerical construct denoting the progress of postgraduate medical, dental, veterinary, podiatry or pharmacy residents in their residency programs. It is used to stratify responsibility in most training programs and to determine salary.

PGY-4s provide supervision to PGY-1 residents on weekdays (i.e., buddy call). PGY-4s average 0-1 buddy calls a month over 5 months out of the year. PGY-4s do NOT have any weekend calls or night float.

PGY-2, PGY-3, and PGY-4 Scheduling runs on blocks–with every block being four weeks long. The PGY-2 (CA1) year includes blocks of basic anesthesia (approximately 8 to 10 blocks).

There are 9 months of clinical neurosurgery and three months of electives during PGY-4 of Cedars-Sinai Neurological Surgery Residency program.

In this capacity, the PGY-4 will lead treatment team, provide guidance to younger residents, teach medical students, and make final medical decision for patients.

Available to selected PGY 4 residents, promotes enhanced development of clinical, teaching, administrative, and leadership skills. Chief residency options include service on inpatient, outpatient, emergency, or psychosomatic medicine units.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Division of Intramural Research (DIRP) offers an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved residency program for the fourth year of post graduate psychiatric training (PGY4).

Many of the fourth year residents enjoy rotating through Interventional Psychiatry, advanced psychotherapy training (including dialectical behavioral therapy) or women’s mental health. Opportunities exist for acting attending electives on any of our rotations and/or various experiences through any of our Fellowships.

As a fourth year, you have many options to take on roles as program leaders. You can develop your niche and interest via many electives. The program offers skill based training and certification with ECT and TMS. Our program emphasizes compassionate, patient centered care.
