Feb 19, 2016 · I see that PCM and ECU are the two most used terms for the actual engine computers. ECM is generally a "catch All" term that can mean quite a few things. I have a few friends that are electrical engineers and they use the term ECM for "Electronic control module". Which could literally mean anything driven by a computer.

May 19, 2021 · Its not going to be cap problems. Maybe a logic gate failing or some type of liquid/moisture that sneaked in. These type of things are not easy to diagnose and repair on the bench honestly unless the conditions can be replicated while your working on it. Definitely worth opening up and taking a look at tho. The Sport trac pcm's are a bit pricey.

The difference can be a little fuzzy, but in my mind, if it's controlling the transmission shift points, or would be if the vehicle had an automatic transmission, it's a PCM. Hmm, looks like Toyota calls it an ECM though.

I would start by verifying the communication lines from the DLC to the PCM have good continuity. Finally, the output signals need verified. Is the PCM trying to control the injectors or not.
