I got cable through a gray plastic box that put all the channels onto the UHF and had a little conversion chart. My "remote" was a plastic squeezie thing that made a hissing/whistling sound that would turn the power to the set on or off.

The cable box at my friends' house could be altered to get all of the pay channels if you slipped a piece of paper into the top of the box. There were metal "forks" that completed a circuit with the top of the box that blocked the pay channels.

Oct 14, 2018 · We had a similar box somewhere in the late 70s. It was an upgrade with the switch on the left side to select the row and a fine tuning knob on the right. There was also a separate "descrambler" box for HBO. My neighborhood had cable starting in 1973.
