Square Formation is a Technology and infantry Formation in Empire: Total War and Napoleon: Total War. A defensive posture for musket-armed infantry units, creating an impassable wall of steel to fend off cavalry attacks.

Sep 17, 2015 · In shogun 2, yes. In every other TW game, no. Exception would be dragoons in etw or ntw, but only if they have a wall they can hide behind for cover. The point of dragoons in Empire and Napoleon is to ride up to an enemy flank, dismount, fire, mount and ride away before they can catch you.

Mar 16, 2015 · I'm playing in a multiplayer campaign, and my line infantry are always destroyed by cavalry because the Square Formation button is locked. I can't find any research that will allow me to unlock it, either.

Mar 15, 2011 · By tinkering with NTW using LtChambers (et al.) excellent PFM tool and replacing square_formation with the pike_square_formation attribute left over from ETW, this mod allows infantry to form much thicker squares against cavalry attacks at the cost of increased vulnerability to artillery (see screenshot).

May 15, 2014 · Go to the graphics and bring the unit size up to medium or large you will be able to use the square formation. As far as I know, not all Infantry types are able to use the square formation in combat.

Oct 13, 2009 · The only request I have for square formations in NTW is that a unit can not form square period if engaged in melee. As the square formation is now you can let a line infantry unit get charged in the rear by cavalry wait a few seconds and form square for the exploit win.

Aug 17, 2011 · The pike formation is closer historically to the 'rallying square' which was a real formation. The square is completely wrong, as its only two ranks deep and as such no defence against cavalry at all, in fact I've seen cavalry ride right through it on the battlefield.
