The EMD E8 is a 2,250-horsepower (1,678 kW), A1A-A1A passenger-train locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of La Grange, Illinois. A total of 450 cab versions, or E8As, were built from August 1949 to January 1954, 447 for the U.S. and 3 for Canada. 46 E8Bs were built from December 1949 to January 1954, all for the U.S.

NYC 4083 is a one-of-a-kind locomotive that New York Central painted in the experimental “Century Green” paint scheme. It was one one of three units, in an A-B-A set which received the same treatment.

3 days ago · NYC E8 numbers: started at 4036 and went to 4095. Also, 4003 and 4020 were originally E7s that were wrecked and were "rebuilt" by EMD as E8s (probably only the truck frames and a few other minor items reused-- the "rebuild" was a bookkeeping exercise).

In the late 40s, as steam locomotives began to disappear, streamlined EMD diesels often had the honor of pulling the railroads' finest passenger trains. This New York Centeal E8 pulled many of its owner's named trains, the most famous of which was the 20th Century Limited.

Of the 450 E8A's that were built by EMD, NYC #4085 is one of an estimated 58 that survive today. This loco had the historic honor of leading the final eastbound 20th Century Limited on December 1st, 1967 before the PennCentral merger.
