It was originally serialized in Shueisha 's Weekly Shōnen Jump from October 1972 to August 1973 and Kodansha 's TV Magazine [ja] from October 1973 to September 1974.

Piloted by Kouji Kabuto, it is considered the first super robot.

Mazinga was one of the first three Shogun Warriors (Raideen, Mazinga and Dragun) released in the US in 1977. Both the Japanese Mazinger and Great Mazinger robots were controlled by a pilot who would fly his plane into a docking port that made up their craniums.
