Luigi was based on the car featured in the 1979 film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, which was the directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki. His name was suposed to be Lou.

Luigi is the sixth unlockable character in Cars: Fast as Lightning, with his races being against Chick Hicks, Todd Marcus, Mater, Fillmore, Snot Rod, Wingo, Carla Veloso and Guido.
