I bought a literal bushel of worn-out ties on ebay and was figuring out what to do with long, skinny strips of fabric, when I thought, "Aha! Log cabin strips!" Since silk is fragile, I sewed each block with a flannel base, which also helped keep the squares straight and the right size.
