Wherever you look at the largely pedestrianised city centre, you will see buildings and monuments with a story to tell. A 1,000-year-old fortress, three medieval towers and the most beautiful double row of houses in Europe, on each side of the river, all within walking distance from one another.

Ghent (Dutch: Gent ⓘ; French: Gand ⓘ; historically known as Gaunt in English) is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the province of East Flanders , and the third largest in the country, after Brussels and Antwerp . [ 2 ]

The city of Ghent is less known than Bruges but it rivals its neighbor architecturally. An exceptional city with its churches, its facades and its cobblestones. I recommend following the circuit available in the tourist office guides.

There’s such a wide variety of things to do in Ghent you can easily fill a day with fun activities and stunning sights.

Though small in scale, the university city’s historical heart is a cultural heavyweight; highlights range from the Cloth Hall, Ghent Belfry, St. Bavo’s Cathedral, and St. Nicholas’ Church to the Stadhuis (City Hall), Gravensteen Castle, and the Korenmarkt.

The city center is fairly compact and extremely walkable. The canal winding through the city center adds a unique feel to Ghent, hearkening comparisons to the MUCH larger cities of Vienna and Amsterdam.

In Ghent’s historic city centre, you don’t have to look far for World Heritage worthy of the name. The Castle of the Counts, a medieval fortress surrounded by a moat, is just a stone's throw away from the imposing St Bavo’s Cathedral and the Ghent Belfry.

Dec 20, 2024 · To give your feet a break and enjoy a unique perspective, consider taking a boat tour along the canals—it’s a relaxing way to see parts of the city you might miss from the streets. If you’re arriving by train, the city center is about a 40-minute walk from Gent-Sint-Pieters Station.
