Gartner consultants do strategy but not implementation -- more like a tech-focused management consultancy. They do custom projects and the like, using small teams that work in-depth with one client for weeks or months at a time.

Gartner has a small (by comparison) consulting unit which is separate from its research division, although the two tend to collaborate and share info. The consulting unit would typically compete with the big 4 and sometimes digital practices within MBB.

I once had an interview with gartner. They had reached out to me regarding an AE position that they wanted me for. It was a gartner-recruiter and not a 3. Party. I was not in the consultation-business mind you, I was a rep at a hardware manufacturer, but with a SaaS aspect and very comfortable selling to large enterprise.

Didn’t W2 higher than other sales jobs, but learned more than I ever have selling niche products. I legitimately feel like I can sell any decent product to executives and senior leadership teams because of what I learned at Gartner. Gartner gave me the confidence to leave and start my own company (which I’ve since sold).
