The Virginian EL-C, later known as the New Haven EF-4 and E33, was an electric locomotive built for the Virginian Railway by General Electric in August 1955. They were the first successful production locomotives to use Ignitron (mercury arc) rectifier technology.

Aug 28, 2024 · The Virginian’s EL-C rectifiers were the most advance electric locomotives the railroad ever owned. Built in the late 1950s by General Electric they produced over 3,000 hp and were quite adept at hauling coal out of the southern West Virginia mountains.

The GE EL-C was a type of electric locomotive. The locomotives were delivered to the Virginian between October 1956 and 1957 and numbered 130-141. GE used then-new Ignitron rectifier technology, first used on the experimental Pennsylvania Railroad E2c and E3b locomotives.

Conrail acquired 10 PC class E33 electrics numbered 4600-4610 in 1976. The GE model EL-C electrics led a very storied career before they made it to Conrail rails, having been born in 1956 and 1957 as 130-141 for the Virginian Railway.

Here is a trio of PC electric units inherited from Virginian Rwy. Built by GE in August of 1955 and designated EL-C, these units along with their 9 other sisters were true boomers - Virginian to NW to NH finally to PC who reclassified the EL-C units as E33.
