Da Nang carried the nickname of "Rocket City" for good reason. The Viet Cong with the arms and assistance from the North Vietnamese Regular Army frequently launched Soviet manufactured 140 millimeter rockets into the air base from positions within six miles of the runways. 120 MM rockets replaced the larger 140s in mid 1967.
