The CXAM radar system was the first production radar system deployed on United States Navy ships, operating in the mid-high VHF frequency band of 200 MHz.

To save weight and similify design, the Navy's subsequent large wartime search radars, including the CXAM-1, SA, SC, SK and SR-types, had non-elevating antennas. The CXAM's distinctive appearance makes it easy to identify in photographs taken between mid-1940 and early 1943.

The CXAM radar is the first serial production radar deployed on U.S. Navy ships. It was developed at the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) by physicist Robert Morris Page and his team during the 1930s.

CXAM operated at a relatively long wavelength (1.5 meters, equivalent to 200 megahertz), and its 14-degree-wide beam offered a resolution of three degrees. It could distinguish two objects 400 yards apart, and its range was accurate within 300 yards.

On the Day of Infamy, three of the eight battleships at Pearl Harbor had a CXAM radar installed. Of the twenty CXAMs ordered, nineteen had been installed in heavy combatants throughout the U.S. Navy, and twenty-seven out of the forty-eight SA and SC-1 radars had been installed in smaller combatants.

May 11, 1999 · Adapted from the original CXAM and SC-1, the SK radar had a maximum detection range of 150 miles, earning a reputation as one of the best long-range air search radars of the war. The radars in this space remanded unchanged for the rest of the war.

The CXAM1 naval air search radar was one of the first to see widespread use, being mounted on a few capital ships by 1942. It provided no altitude information and was heavy and bulky, but it revolutionized naval air defense.

The CXAM long-wave radar (and its upgraded version, the CXAM-1) are among the first radars to be installed on American vessels. The first radars were installed on the main loads in early 1942.
