Coilin - Wikipedia
Coilin is a protein that in humans is encoded by the COIL gene. [5][6] Coilin got its name from the coiled shape of the Cajal bodies in which it is found. It was first identified using human autoimmune serum. Coilin protein is one of the main molecular components of Cajal bodies.

Initially identified as a marker of coiled bodies (now Cajal bodies or CBs), the protein coilin was discovered a quarter of century ago. Coilin is now known to scaffold the CB, but its structure and function are poorly understood.

Jan 1, 2014 · Coilin is a major scaffolding protein of CBs and is essential for their formation. 33-37 In addition to its structural role, coilin may also be implicated in functional activities ascribed to the CB.
Coilin, more than a molecular marker of the cajal (coiled) body
The Cajal body has now regained the interest of biologists, due to the isolation of a protein marker, coilin. Despite current widespread use of coilin to identify Cajal bodies in various cell types, its structure and function are still little understood.

In this brief review, I focus on coilin and Cajal bodies. Coilin is a key scaffolding protein of Cajal bodies that is evolutionarily conserved in metazoans. Cajal bodies are thought to be one of the archetypal nuclear structures involved in the metabolism of several short non …

A key "signature" component of CBs is coilin, the scaffolding protein essential for CB formation and function. Using an RNA silencing (loss-of-function) approach, we describe here new phenomena whereby coilin also affects, directly or indirectly, a variety of interactions between host plants and viruses that have RNA or DNA genomes.
