
Leveling a 2x8 sill plate on top of a cmu wall
Feb 26, 2018 · What type of shim do I use to shim up a sill plate 1/4 inch on top of a cmu block wall? Are the blocks that out of level? What's the actual problem? My first response is a treated wood shim of your own making, but I'm curious if there's more to the story. Pour a bond beam and make the top of that level?

Feb 12, 2011 · The pier consists of open core CMU's, and if not fully grouted, there is less than adequate surface to support shims of ANY type. The pier should be topped with 4" (nominal) solid blocks. What's up with the blue tape--some attempt to dam mortar-as-shim material?

The window is installed using shims just like with a wood-framed sill. The secondary seat, or backdam, of the precast sill should be located far enough to the interior to allow space between it and the window so that shims can be adjusted during installation, and to allow the interior air seal backer rod and sealant to be installed.

Jun 7, 2022 · Stacks of softwood shims and the top shims are sometimes only an inch wide, not 2x6 full size pieces. I know that for mobile homes, no more than 2" of wood is allowed for shims on top of concrete or CMU piers.

Dec 20, 2019 · All that the builders need to do is utilize a series (multiple pieces) of wood shims when leveling the main beams in order to reduce the pressure on the shims. Usually, they just use a single piece of 1-1/2 inch wide shim.

Dec 11, 2023 · We’re buying a home in Northwest Ohio and the home inspector said there were too many of these CMUs stacked in top of each other and said they shouldn’t be dry stacked. I found building codes online (for Texas) that state 36” is the max height for a single pier before you should go to two piers. But I couldn’t find anything for Ohio specifically.

Feb 26, 2018 · CMU piers are not banned, in fact in certain areas they are quite prevalent. You mentioned there are piers, but quoted a part of the code that deals with exterior bearing walls. In any case, the IRC was probably not around in the early 1900's.
Shim pt wood on masonry concrete - Fine Homebuilding
Jan 29, 2025 · We are going to need to shim a pt site-built girder (3-ply 2×10) that will rest on masonry cmu concrete/rebar filled block. We haven’t built the girder yet but pretty sure it will need shimmed around 1/4″.
