The buntal hat is a traditional lightweight straw hat from the Philippines made from very finely-woven fibers extracted from the petioles of buri palm leaves. It is traditionally worn by farmers working in the fields and was a major export of the Philippines in the first half of the 20th century.

Our Buntal Mats are hand woven, and easily lend themselves to be blocked over a hat block, or they can be shaped free hand or with a small travel iron! They are currently taking the hat world by storm and we will have hundreds of them soon!

Buntal hat weaving using buntal leaves was not just an art form but a cottage industry in Baliuag, Bulacan in the early 1900s. Every household became a production center as housewives contributed their skills and time to make buntal hats.

The study was conducted to determine the historical origin of Baliwag buntal and establish connection between the town of Baliwag and the province of Quezon, identifying the factors and circumstances on how buntal hat became one of Bulacan’s traditional crafts and the symbol of the municipality of Baliwag.

They were inspired and started making hats and headbands from similar colours and prints and sold them to their friends, family and a few local ski shops back home. They persuaded the US ski team to make Bula the official headwear supplier.
