Blackbeard’s little squadron began to haunt the sea lanes between the mainland and West Indian Islands from this time on. Several times, they were put into Cuba and sold their booty in Havana. Although these buccaneers roamed far out to sea, North Carolina became their headquarters.

In the early 1700’s, Blackbeard was the most infamous pirate to sail the Virginia and Carolina coast. The sight of his ship with its black flag showing a skeleton, a spear, an hourglass and a heart dripping with blood, caused most merchant captains to hoist the white flag of surrender.

Blackbeard roamed the Atlantic from around 1716 until 1718, robbing ships from the West Indies to the Carolinas. He had a reputation for unbridled ferocity. When Blackbeard went into battle, he strapped multiple pistols and multiple cutlasses to his body.
