Abel Tasman, Dutch navigator who was the first European to sight Tasmania, New Zealand, Tonga, and the Fiji Islands. On his first voyage (1642–43) Tasman explored the Indian Ocean, Australasia, and the southern Pacific; on his second voyage (1644) he traveled in Australian and South Pacific waters.

Hand-drawn and decorated on Japanese ‘gampi’ paper, the original Tasman map is one of the most irreplaceable objects in the State Library’s collection. It is the only record of Abel Tasman’s two voyages between 1642 and 1644.

This composite chart of the Dutch discoveries of the Australian coastline is generally referred to as Tasman's chart. It draws together maps from the resources of the Dutch East India Company of all the discoveries by Dutch explorers, including the two voyages of Abel Tasman .

The map combines the results of Abel Tasman's first (1642-1643) and second (1644) voyages with those of earlier Dutch navigators. It shows a surprisingly accurate general outline of the Australian coastline.
