4871 is an LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 locomotive, originally numbered 4871 entering service with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in March 1945 and having 40000 added to its number under British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. [1]

44871 was one of the locomotives used to haul the Fifteen Guinea Special on 11 th August 1968 in tandem with 44781 on the Carlisle to Manchester leg. It was withdrawn from service the following day. 44871 remained at Carnforth which became Steamtown museum after being purchased by Dr Peter Beet and Graham Ellis.

Locomotive 4871 was built by the LMS at Crewe in 1945 and later renumbered 44871 by British Railways. It was one of the last steam locomotives in use at the end of steam under British Railways operation. 44871 was used with 44781 on the Carlisle to Manchester leg of the infamous end of steam ‘15 Guinea’ farewell special on 11 August 1968.
