Jeanne Baret (also spelled Baré) sailed around the world as part of the first French circumnavigation of the globe from 1766 to 1769. At this time, France was looking to expand its economy. So the French government funded hundreds of expeditions to travel around the world.

Jeanne Baret (born July 27, 1740, Burgundy, France—died August 5, 1807, Saint-Aulaye) was a French botanist and explorer, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. Disguised as a man aboard a French naval vessel, she collected samples of more than 6,000 plant specimens from around the world.

Jeanne Baret ([ʒan ba.ʁɛ]; 27 July 1740 – 5 August 1807) is recognised as the first woman to have completed a voyage of circumnavigation of the globe, which she did via maritime transport. A key part of her journey was as a member of Louis Antoine de Bougainville's expedition on the ships La Boudeuse and Étoile in 1766–1769. [1] [2]
